CLAYTON – Thursday afternoon, Johnston County Sheriff Steve Bizzell announced the arrest of a third person in connection with a February 17th double shooting that left one victim dead and the other paralyzed.

Cassidy Lorene Hunter, age 21, of Smithfield was arrested Thursday and charged with accessory after the fact. On Wednesday, investigators announced the arrests of two juveniles, ages 16 and 17, on murder and attempted murder charges. The 16 year-old is from the Garner area and the 17 year-old is from the Willow Spring community.

Harley Alexander Shirley, age 21, of Clayton and Sophie Hagy, age 20, were attending a balloon release at a home on Josephine Road last Thursday, February 17th as part of a wake for a teenager who recently died in a car accident. Shots were fired striking Shirley and Hagy.

They fled the scene in a passenger car and went to the Sheetz convenience store, about three miles away at the intersection of Highway 42 West and Cornwallis Road, to summon help.

Shirley died at the scene. Hagy was rushed to the hospital. According to family and friends, she was shot in the back and is now paralyzed from the waist down.

A motive has not been disclosed.

A GoFundMe account has been established for Sophie to help with her medical expenses.

  1. I feel you should be able to tell the names of underage kids when they are being charged with this type of charge. Parents should be able to know if their kid has or is around people who would do something like this.
