Tillis Co-sponsors SAVE Act, Continues Fight To Ensure Only American Citizens Can Vote

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Thom Tillis has co-sponsored the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, legislation requiring individuals to provide proof of U.S. citizenship in order to register to vote in federal elections.

“This commonsense legislation builds confidence in our election system by ensuring that voting in our elections is reserved solely for American citizens,” said Senator Tillis. “As millions of illegal immigrants enter our country because of President Biden’s failed border policies, it is crucial we safeguard our democratic process by ensuring only American citizens can register and vote in our elections.”

In addition to the SAVE Act, Senator Tillis is a cosponsor of the Prevent Foreign Citizens from Voting Act which would prohibit federal funds from going to any state or local government that allows foreign citizens to vote in any federal, state, or local election.

Background

Specifically, the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act:

  • Requires states to obtain documentary proof of U.S. citizenship when registering individuals to vote in federal elections
  • Requires states to remove non-citizens from their official lists of eligible voters.
  • Establishes criminal penalties for registering an applicant to vote in a federal election who fails to present documentation proving U.S. citizenship.
  • Mandates the Election Assistance Commission adopt and transmit guidance for implementing the bill’s requirements to state election officials.

  1. I thought Tillis was above political ploys, I guess not. That’s already a requirement of our state constitution. I guess anything is fare game when all you care about is power and getting re-elected.
    Can you say Term Limits!!!!

  2. Non-citizens, voting is NOT a thing. It’s ALREADY a law. This is just a ploy by the GOP to whip up racist fear. The GOP can not win fair elections. Thats why they make it hard to vote. Submitting an absentee ballot has become very difficult. Districts have been gerrymandered so republicans can maintain state control. The truth is, the more people that move to NC the more blue we become.
