Tow Truck Driver Arrested After Responding To Accident

A tow truck driver dispatched to an accident scene Tuesday was arrested.

Smithfield Police said they were investigating a collision on Booker Dairy Road at N. Brightleaf Boulevard around 6:00PM.  Police requested a wrecker respond to haul away one of the damaged vehicles.

Police said the tow truck driver arrived and hooked up the damaged vehicle to his wrecker. Prior to leaving the scene, the tow truck driver made contact with a police officer investigating the crash.

Captain R. Sheppard said the officer noticed a strong odor of alcohol on the breath of the truck driver. The driver, 35 year-old Christopher Lee Spencer of Highway 39 North, Selma, was detained.  Spencer later registered 0.07 on the Breathalyzer.  Police said the legal limit is 0.04 in NC for an operator of a commercial vehicle.

Spencer was charged with DWI and given a custody release pending a Nov. 12th court appearance.
