A Kinston company has been awarded an $833,037.50 contract by the Town of Smithfield to inspect and repair aging and leaking sewer lines.
In a unanimous vote, Herring-Rivenbark Inc. was selected for the project. They were the low bidder among 6 companies that placed bids with the Town. Other bids ranged from $845,133 to $1,561,475. The Town had budgeted $900,000 for the work.
Herring-Rivenbark will inspect approximately 40,000 linear feet of sewer lines in East and South Smithfield, plus a small section of West Smithfield. The bid includes repairing 10,000 feet of pipe, 36 manhole covers, and 60 sewer connections.
The sections of sewer lines to be repaired will depend upon where infiltration and inflow problems are found. Town Councilman Emery Ashley said, “I am glad to see improvements being made to infrastructure.”
