Town Converts Intersection From 4-Way Stop To 2-Way Stop
The Town of Smithfield has taken action after a number of West Smithfield residents asked that an intersection with four-way stop signs be converted to a two-way stop. The intersection is Old Farm Road at Evergreen Lane.
Police Chief Keith Powell said a check of department records indicated there hadn’t been a single accident reported at the intersection in the last 5 years. He was also unable find any documents why the two residential streets had a four-way stop installed to begin with unless it was for future growth.
The Council agreed to allowed town employees remove the stop signs on Evergreen Lane but leave the stop signs on Old Farm Road. Chief Powell said the stops signs have long caused confusion for residents on Evergreen Lane.
The Council unanimously approved the request and the two stop signs on Evergreen Lane were removed.
