SMITHFIELD – Members of the Smithfield Town Council honored former Councilman David Stevens during their June monthly meeting. Mr. Stevens was elected in November 2017 and sworn in the following month. He served one term and did not seek reelection.
His District 2 seat, which represents South Smithfield, is now held by his nephew, Sloan Stevens, who won election in May 2022.
Mayor Pro Tem John Dunn read a Proclamation saying in part, “The Mayor and Town Council of the Town of Smithfield wish to acknowledge and express its appreciation to David Stevens for his dedicated service to the citizens of Smithfield as a member of the Town Council for the past 4 years… The Town of Smithfield has been fortunate to have had the services of David Stevens who has provided leadership and rendered good judgment for the betterment of all of the citizens of the Town.”
Town Manager Mike Scott told The Johnston County Report, “David Stevens is a great representative of Smithfield. As a Councilmember, he always took the time to understand the issue at hand, sort out the best direction for the Town and its citizens, and voice his opinion and his reasons behind that opinion. He was the epitome of a team player and the Town prospered under his leadership. He worked very hard to make sure he was leaving the Town in a great place for smart, future growth and the management of all its resources.”
Mr. Stevens was presented a copy of the Proclamation and a ceremonial Key to the City. He thanked the board and citizens, while also recognizing his nephew, who replaced him as the District 2 councilman. Stevens said he was “proud to be a part” of the board and the work they had accomplished during the last four years.
