Smithfield Town Manager Mike Scott says repairs to a storm-damaged section of South Vermont Street will be made as soon as possible. Nearly six inches of rain fell early-Friday morning causing considerable flooding problems in and around the Smithfield area.
A section of South Vermont Street was washed away by the heavy rains. Scott estimated the damage between $15,000 and $20,000. The street is owned by the Town of Smithfield and not the NC DOT. As soon as a contractor can he hired, repairs will be made, he said.
“No other roads were damaged that we know of. We are still assessing all areas of Town,” Scott said Monday in an email.
Officials estimate Vermont Street can be fully repaired and reopened to traffic within 3 weeks.
