Town May Waive Fees For Red And White Demo

The property owner of the former Red & White grocery store is asking Town of Clayton leaders to keep the land.

In March, the vacant building at 110 W. Front Street was razed upon orders from the town council, after several years of plans to renovate the building fell through. The century old building was condemned by the town in 2012.

A $38,000 invoice was sent to property owner Katie Smith for the demolition but Town Manager Steve Biggs told council members on May 4th her attorney is offering up an alternative deal. Smith is willing to swap the deed to the land in place of a cash reimbursement to the town.

Biggs recommended the council defer collection of the payment for 90 days. He also hinted there was a possible buyer interested in the property.
