“This award is more than just a title. It’s a tribute to a beloved leader, a commitment to public service, and a lasting legacy,” said Clayton Town Manager Rich Cappola. “It honors those who give their all to the Town, just as my dear friend and longtime Water Resources Director Byron Poelman did.”

Adding to the significance of the moment, Poelman’s family presented Probst with the award, a gesture she described as deeply meaningful. While the recognition took place at the Town’s Employee Holiday Luncheon, the impact of the award continues to resonate months later.

Probst, an Executive Assistant who has been with the Town for 13 years, works closely with departments at the Operations Center (653 Veterans Parkway), supporting Public Works, Water Resources, and Electric. For her, receiving this award was deeply personal. Poelman, for whom the award is named, was more than a respected leader; he was a friend and someone who significantly influenced her professional journey.

“It was a very special moment for me,” Probst said, holding back tears as she recalled the moment her name was announced. “Byron was a very loved man around here. He was a great mentor. And it was an honor to be the first recipient of that award.”

Poelman, who dedicated 26 years to the Town of Clayton, left an undeniable mark on the community. As Water Resources Director, he led critical projects and shaped the future of the department. But beyond his work, he was known for his kindness, wisdom, and the way he uplifted those around him.

“He was always there when you needed him,” Probst shared. “He was just a great man overall – workwise, familywise – just an amazing person to know. He taught me so much. What I know today, what’s gotten me through the years here, is because of him.”

The Byron Poelman Legacy of Excellence: Employee of the Year Award was created to honor employees, like Poelman, who embody dedication, leadership, innovation, integrity, and a genuine desire to serve the community. Probst’s colleagues saw these qualities in her, and their heartfelt nominations spoke volumes.

“I come to work every day just trying to do my job the best I can,” Probst said. “I enjoy my work, and that makes it easy for me. But to know my coworkers see that… it means everything to me.”

Outside of her daily responsibilities, Probst’s impact extends beyond her office. As part of the Wellness Committee, she helps create programs that keep employees engaged, motivated, and supported.

“I want people to feel valued,” she said. “I love working with employees to come up with new ideas to keep everyone happy and healthy. It’s fun for me.”

Probst is also a familiar face at Town events where she enjoys connecting with residents and helping them understand the many ways the Town of Clayton serves its people.

“They get to see us in a different light, and we get to help them in their time of need. That’s what it’s all about,” she said.

As the first recipient of this award, Probst’s name will forever be tied to the legacy of Poelman, a fitting recognition for someone who carries his same spirit of dedication and kindness.

“I just want to say thank you to everyone who nominated me… for their kind words… for seeing what I strive to do every day. I am truly grateful,” she expressed.

Probst received a commemorative coin and a glass plaque as part of the award. Her ongoing dedication to public service continues to have a lasting impact on the Town of Clayton.
