Town To Identify Lead And Copper Service Lines

SMITHFIELD – The Smithfield Town Council has awarded a contract to identify where lead and copper service lines exist in the public water distribution system. The council awarded a $52,500 grant to WithersRavenel to perform the work.

Ted Credle, Director of Smithfield Public Utilities, said the EPA is requiring public water systems across the United States identify where lead and copper lines still exist. The report must be submitted by all public water distribution suppliers to the EPA by 2024. It remains uncertain what, if any action, the EPA will take with the findings.
