A tractor trailer fire closed northbound lanes of Interstate 95 Friday afternoon. Around 1:30pm, the tractor trailer was headed northbound on I-95 near the 75 mile marker between Dunn and Benson when the driver noticed his load of round hay bales was on fire. He immediately pulled onto the shoulder and called for assistance.
Fire crews from Harnett and Johnston counties responded and battled the stubborn blaze, removing some of the burning hay bales with a backhoe.
Both northbound lanes have been shut down and traffic has backed up for several miles.
Crews hope to reopen one northbound lane by 3:00pm and have both northbound lanes fully reopened by 5:00pm this afternoon.
No injuries have been reported.
