Traffic Stop Unravels String Of Vehicle Break-Ins

JOHNSTON COUNTY — A rash of vehicle break-ins has been solved thanks in part to a routine traffic stop by Zebulon Police.

Authorities say two suspects are now in custody in connection with approximately 23 car break-ins reported in late November. The incidents occurred primarily along Castleberry Road east of Clayton and in the Archer Lodge community.

The break-ins were reported over a short period of time and involved unlocked vehicles parked at residences, according to investigators. Victims reported the theft of personal items, including identification cards, debit cards, and other valuables, prompting an investigation by the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office.

A significant break in the case occurred shortly after the break-ins when officers with the Zebulon Police Department conducted an early morning traffic stop on a vehicle occupied by Kenneth Watts Jr., of Zebulon, and Ashley Lauren Ennis, of Pine Level.

During the stop, police reportedly discovered a firearm inside the vehicle, along with multiple items believed to have been stolen during the Johnston County break-ins. Among the items recovered were identification cards and Social Security cards belonging to victims.

Investigators later confirmed that the recovered items were linked to the Johnston County cases. As a result, warrants were obtained charging both occupants in connection with the vehicle break-ins.

Watts was later arrested in Wake County, while Ennis was taken into custody in Johnston County. Both face multiple felony charges related to breaking and entering motor vehicles and possession of stolen property. Authorities said additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.

Law enforcement officials also indicated the two suspects are believed to be involved in similar vehicle break-ins in neighboring Wake and Franklin counties.

In addition to the two suspects already arrested, a third individual is also facing charges for allegedly using some of the stolen debit cards taken during the Johnston County break-ins. Investigators say the debit cards were used to make purchases before the victims were able to deactivate the accounts. The individual’s name has not been released, pending arrest.

Authorities remind residents to lock their vehicles and avoid leaving valuables inside.
