CLAYTON – No injuries were reported after a train collided with a car in Clayton. The incident happened around 1:20am Sunday at the Shotwell Road rail crossing.
Clayton Police said Kathleen Ann Brees, 55, of Raleigh was traveling north on Shotwell Road in a 2018 Ford Explorer when she ran off the road and crashed into a gravel embankment on the railroad tracks. The driver got out of the vehicle before it was struck by a westbound freight train.
Brees was arrested and charged by Clayton Police with driving while impaired.
The railroad crossing was closed for approximately three hours due to the investigation and inspection of the train tracks.
