Triangle Expressway Extension Opens To Traffic

RALEIGH – Tuesday morning, the N.C. Turnpike Authority (NCTA) and the N.C. Department of Transportation officially cut the ribbon on Complete 540 Phase 1, an 18-mile extension of the Triangle Expressway.

This new extension, which stretches from the N.C. 55 Bypass in Apex to the I-40/I-42 interchange near Garner, is now open to traffic.

Known as the Triangle Expressway/Toll N.C. 540, this new travel option is expected to enhance connectivity and reduce travel times for commuters and residents.

“The excitement surrounding this long-anticipated project is contagious,” said J.J. Eden, Executive Director of NCTA. “The Triangle Expressway will be instrumental in supporting the region’s growth and development, providing a reliable and efficient transportation option for all.”

Drivers should be aware that some final construction activities will be ongoing at various locations along the Triangle Expressway and cross streets.

Phase 2 of the Complete 540 project is currently under construction and will extend the Triangle Expressway an additional 10 miles from I-40/I-42 to the existing I-540/I-87/U.S. 64/U.S. 264 interchange in Knightdale, providing the final link to complete the 540 loop.

Phase 2 is anticipated to be completed by late 2028.

  1. I predict that usage will be minimal do to the high cost of tolls on this already outdated road. Eventually the tolls will be taken down when the cost of the turnpike authority is deemed higher than the monies gained by the tolls.

    • Your argument is as old, as tolls themselves.
      Tolls are used worldwide.
      Either pay as you go…
Or pay more taxes to support the NECESSARY construction.
      There is no ‘free lunch’.
Sorry you fail to get this….

      • @nativereturn the latest examples of toll road death is the Cumberland Parkway in KY. The state determined that it cost more to maintain the toll system that it was bringing in from tolls so the system was removed. After the toll removal more drivers we using he road. Maybe it’s your idea of paying to drive on a road after you already pay gas and other taxes for roads that’s old.

        • I don’t agree. I think Tolls will be successful in that particular area. Too many people prefer a quicker route and are willing to pay for it.

  2. It has been a scam from Day 1 since the state of NC spent the federal dollars that were to be used to complete the 540 interstate. Now users have to pay twice to use the roadway. Typical politicians robbing the citizens. Don’t be fooled by the very group who rob us on a daily basis.
