Troopers Identify Two People Killed In Collision With Dump Truck

SAMPSON COUNTY – The State Highway Patrol has released the names of two people killed in a collision between a car and dump truck. The accident happened at 2:02pm Monday, on US 421 near New Bethel Lane, about 4 miles north of Clinton.

Troopers said a Nissan passenger car, traveling southbound on US 421, crossed the center line and collided head-on with a northbound dump truck pulling a small trailer.

After the collision, the dump truck overturned on top of the car in a ditch. A large wrecker was brought in to lift the dump truck off the car and extricate the two victims.

The driver and passenger in the Nissan died from their injuries. The driver was identified as Kenneth Evans, 54, of McKoy Street, Clinton and the passenger, Mary Elizabeth Thompson, 74, of Badger Court, Clinton.

The driver of the dump truck, Carlie C. McLamb III, 34, of Hodges Chapel Road, Dunn was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

US 421 was closed for several hours until the accident could be cleared.
