Hundreds of people headed to do their Black Friday shopping ended up being stuck in traffic Friday afternoon after a box truck overturned. The accident happened around 1:00pm on Interstate 40 at the 313 mile marker, just east of the I-40 / NC42 interchange.
The truck, hauling food products, overturned in the westbound median, after reportedly coming upon a slow moving vehicle and swerved to miss hitting the other vehicle. The truck struck safety cables in the median then flipped onto its side.
The truck driver was not injured. However, the wreck forced the closure of one westbound lane. Onlooker delays caused traffic backups in both directions for several hours.
