Two Arrested On Drug Trafficking Charges

HARNETT COUNTY – A joint investigation by local, state and federal authorities led to the arrest of an accused large scale drug dealer.

In recent months, the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office, Sanford Police Department, Coats Police Department, NCSBI, and Homeland Security had been conducting a narcotics investigation into Jonathan Smith.

Smith had been accused of possessing and selling narcotics at his residence located at 134 South Railroad Street in Coats.

On July 10, 2024, Jonathan Smith was stopped driving a moped on Delma Grimes Road in Coats.

Simultaneously, the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team served a search warrant at his residence at 134 Railroad Street in Coats.

Approximately 5 pounds of methamphetamine, 5.8 grams of fentanyl, two pounds of marijuana, and $24,359 in cash was seized.

Jonathan Smith was charged with four counts of trafficking methamphetamine, one count of trafficking opium/heroin, and felony possession of marijuana.

The investigation also led to the arrest of Kristin Louise Gainey, who was charged with trafficking opium/heroin, possession of methamphetamine, and possession with intent to sell or deliver marijuana.

Jonathan Smith and Kristin Gainey were placed in the Harnett County Detention Center. Smith was given a $1 million bond and Gainey a $250,000 secured bond.

Sheriff Wayne Coats said, “The coordinated effort involving multiple agencies serves as a prime example of how collaborative initiatives can significantly disrupt the drug trafficking operations in Harnett County and its neighboring areas. I want to express my gratitude to every officer involved, and we anticipate future collaborations with these agencies.”

  2. Funny thing is that guy was literally just locked up in Harnett co for like two years straight and we all see he learned NOTHING! This time they need to throw away the key!!!!!
