FOUR OAKS – An innocent motorist was injured after being struck by a driver fleeing from law enforcement. Around 4:00pm Monday, the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop the driver of a black Jeep SUV on US Highway 13. The driver attempted to elude authorities reaching high speeds.
The chase continued into Johnston County, as Johnston County deputies, the State Highway Patrol and Four Oaks Police joined the pursuit.
Around 4:20pm, the suspect was fleeing north on Highway 96 South near Four Oaks and failed to stop for a stop sign at US 701. The fleeing Jeep appeared to have been t-boned by a black Chevrolet SUV traveling on US 701. One person in the Chevrolet was injured and transported to the hospital.
The suspect’s vehicle came to rest off the roadway against a fence. The suspect was immediately taken into custody by Sampson County deputies. He was evaluated at the scene by EMS but was not transported to the hospital.
The roadway was closed for nearly an hour and traffic had to detour around the intersection.
The State Highway Patrol is investigating. We have reached out to the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office to obtain more details.
