Two people were killed and three others were injured in a collision around 2:30pm this afternoon (Wednesday) on Highway 42 West. The crash happened about 1/2 mile before the I-40 interchange in Cleveland.
According to the State Highway Patrol, a silver passenger car was traveling eastbound on Highway 42 and according to witnesses may have been speeding. The driver lost control and crossed the centerline. The car was struck in the passenger side by a Chevy pickup truck traveling westbound.
Two people in the passenger car died at the scene. Two others in the car were rushed to Wake Medical Center with critical injuries. The driver of the pickup truck was injured. There were no passengers in the pickup.
Highway 42 was shut down between I-40 and Cornwallis Road while the accident was investigated. It reopened at 4:45pm
Family members of the victims arrived at the scene a short time after the fatal crash. The Highway Patrol has not released the names of those involved in the accident.
