Two Men Accused Of Stealing More Than $1,300 In Goods From Walmart

SMITHFIELD — Two men from Surry County were arrested last week after Smithfield Police say they stole more than $1,300 in sporting goods from Walmart and one of the suspects allegedly threatened to kill an officer during the arrest.

Police were called to the Walmart at 1299 N. Brightleaf Boulevard on Nov. 12 around 2:45 p.m. after loss-prevention employees reported that two men had left the store without paying for $1,321.48 in merchandise. Officers located the suspects’ vehicle nearby and conducted a traffic stop.

According to police, both suspects initially provided fictitious names. Inside the vehicle, officers reportedly found the stolen merchandise along with a .380 handgun.

Edward Maher, 45, of Mount Airy, was charged with felony larceny, resisting a public officer, and simple possession of a controlled substance.

Thomas Milles August, 69, also of Mount Airy, was charged with felony conspiracy, resisting a public officer, communicating threats, possession of drug paraphernalia, and two counts of simple possession of a controlled substance.

Police said that while being handcuffed, August threatened to kill the arresting officer, leading to the communicating threats charge.

The stolen items were returned to Walmart.

Both men were taken to the Johnston County Detention Center and held under $15,000 secured bonds each.
