Two overnight vehicle fires, reported less than 15 minutes apart, appear to be arson.
Around 10:40pm Tuesday, the Clayton Fire Department responded to a car fire down a dirt path off of Winston Road. The vehicle was completely burned. Officials said the fire appears to have been intentionally set. The vehicle was so heavily damaged, authorities are still trying to locate a vehicle identification number (VIN) on the car to determine who owns the vehicle. The car appears to be a Dodge Dart.
At 10:53pm, fire crews responded to a vehicle fire on Tarheel Road at Woodall Dairy Road near Benson. A 2002 GMC pickup truck was found ablaze near the intersection. After putting out the fire, authorities checked the serial number on the truck and realized it had been reported stolen hours earlier to Dunn Police.
The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office is investigating both incidents.
