U.S. Highway 70 in Kinston Open to Traffic

One lane will remain closed while crews fix bridge railing

Kinston – The U.S. 70 bridge in Kinston is open to traffic after crews deemed it safe for drivers.

A crash involving a tractor trailer that went through a bridge rail barrier along the westbound lanes and into the Neuse River happened around 4 a.m. Sunday, closing the highway. Crews were able to remove the truck from the river this morning and reopen the highway to traffic.

An underwater inspection of the bridge showed there is no structural damage and it is safe for traffic.

The crash did damage the bridge railing. While crews work to fix it, the westbound left lane will be closed. The repair is expected to be completed later this week, allowing U.S. 70 to fully reopen.

State Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash.  NC DOT Photos
