UNC Health Johnston’s Derby Day Is May 3

Foundation event raises money for patient needs

SMITHFIELD — UNC Health Johnston Derby Day is always fun, festive and fashionable. And this year, organizers are enhancing the experience with the addition of a catered buffet, transportation shuttles and all-inclusive tickets.

Fashionable attendees at last year’s Derby Day watch as members of the Red Mountain Foxhounds race around the track at Portofino.

The fundraiser will be at the Portofino Equestrian Center in Clayton on May 3.

“Derby Day drew more than 1,000 attendees and volunteers last year and we hope to break that attendance record,” says Allison Strickland, director of Johnston Health Foundation. “The event has something for everyone, and the fun-filled day ultimately benefits the patients, programs and services of UNC Health Johnston.”

Like the Kentucky Derby in Louisville, guests are invited to walk the red carpet in their finest Derby hats and fashion, sip mint juleps and Kentucky Oaks Lily cocktails and watch real horse races.

The riders are members of the Red Mountain Hounds, a foxhunting club based in Rougemont. At the starting bell, they race their horses around a nearly half-mile dirt track, churning up dust as they go.

“We truly capture the spirit of the Kentucky Derby with our races and the opportunity to bet on your favorite horse for a chance to win great prizes,” Strickland adds.

Guests are invited to walk the red carpet and to have their photo taken with a horse.

New this year, attendees can enjoy a Derby-inspired dinner and signature mocktails from the bar. And for convenience, they can hop aboard a shuttle to travel between the racetrack, pavilion and parking areas.

Fan favorites will also return, including Louis and Co. Ice Cream, and Stampede of Love’s well-dressed miniature ponies. Appetizers from White Swan BBQ and Chargrill will be featured in the track’s infield.

Gates open at 2:30 p.m. The event closes at 7:30 p.m. after the viewing of the Kentucky Derby.

The price of admission covers food, beverages and access to all attractions, including red carpet photos at the horse barn and the Derby Day fashion contest. Adult tickets are $100. Youth tickets, ages 6 to 20, are $30. Children ages 5 and under get in free. Valet parking is also
available for $25 in advance and $40 at the gate. For more information, go to www.johnstonhealthfoundation.org/derbyday
