SMITHFIELD – Three Smithfield schools entered lockdown procedures for just over an hour Thursday afternoon. The lockdown was lifted after police determined a report a weapon was on campus was unfounded.
Shortly after 1:00pm today (Thursday), Smithfield Selma High (SSS), Smithfield Middle School, and Neuse Charter School entered lockdown procedures after a report of a weapon being on the Smithfield Selma High campus.
Numerous law enforcement officers responded to Smithfield Selma High and determined the report was non-credible, finding no weapon.
The lockdown was lifted and the schools continued normal operations and dismissed at the regular times.
Smithfield Middle and Neuse Charter entered lockdown procedures because of their close proximity to Smithfield Selma High.
Officials said all students and staff were safe the entire time.
