Closures will be July 23-24
Goldsboro – Monday and Tuesday, overnight traffic will need to detour off US 117 in Wayne County to allow crews to safely install concrete girders for an overpass under construction at O’Berry Road.
An NC Department of Transportation contractor will close the highway’s northbound lanes first on July 23 from 9 p.m. until 5 the next morning to place the girders over the northbound lanes.
Then, on July 24, S.T. Wooten Corp. will close the southbound lanes for the same overnight period to finish setting the girders over the rest of the highway.
The detour routes will vary each night:
- When U.S. 117 northbound is closed, drivers wanting to go straight will turn right onto Country Club Road, then left onto U.S. 117 Alternate, which will intersect with U.S. 117. Drivers on Country Club Road needing to go north on U.S. 117 will follow the same detour.
- When U.S. 117 southbound is closed, motorists will turn left onto U.S. 117 Alternate, then right onto Country Club Road and back onto U.S. 117 South. (Traffic on Country Club Road will be allowed to turn right onto U.S. 117 South during the closure.)
On both nights, Wayne County sheriff’s deputies will patrol the detours and direct traffic.
Last year, NCDOT awarded a $20.6 million contract to the Wilson-based company to upgrade the highway’s intersections with O’Berry and Country Club Roads into interchanges, which will have bridges, ramps and loops. The interchanges will improve safety and traffic flow.
The contractor is expected to complete the O’Berry Road interchange later this year, and the Country Club interchange by next summer.
