WILSON’S MILLS – Like many other Johnston County towns, Wilson’s Mills has experienced a large influx of growth over the past several years. With the growth is confusion regarding property owners’ mailing and physical addresses within the town limits.
Leighanna Worley, Town Administrator, says unless residents purchase a post office box in Wilson’s Mills, the mailing and physical addresses inside Wilson’s Mills have either a Smithfield or Clayton address due to the required delivery from one of those post offices. This has created confusion not only regarding mail and package delivery, but also confusion by new residents about where they are located, who to call for various services, and their voting district.
In an effort to clear up the confusion, Town leaders have been working with the US Postal Service to create addresses that reflect the identity of the community.
With the permission the US Postal Service, all property owner addresses will now use the Preferred Last Line (PLL) town name of Wilson’s Mills but will keep the current zip code assigned to the address.
For example, the original address for Town Hall was 4083 Wilson’s Mills Road, Smithfield, NC 27577, but the new address going forward will be 4083 Wilson’s Mills Road, Wilson’s Mills, NC 27577 – using the same zip code from Smithfield, but with the correct Town location name.
There are more than 2,400 property owners within the Wilson’s Mills incorporated limits. Letters regarding the change have been sent out to property owners. The changes are effective immediately.
This isn’t working, when most systems recognize a zip code with a specific city. WM just needs to add a carrier and use their own zip code.
I agree with your statement. Since, Smithfield has an established zip code, if Wilson’s Mills going to use Smithfield’s zip code and their mail going to a different zone, it’s going to cause a serious problem. If, you go to the USPS and type in their address, the town wouldn’t match up.
Hi Blure! This was our original request – to add carrier service to our existing post office with the Wilson’s Mills zip code; however the USPS denied that request. The current post office is not large enough to accommodate carrier service, and USPS is not building or leasing new or larger locations at this time. Changing the town name line on the addresses was their suggestion instead. If you live in town and are having any issues with the changes, please feel free to reach out to us at Town Hall. We are here to help however we can. Thanks!
Blure, the USPS determines which office can, or can not, perform carrier duties. USPS has determined that the Wilson’s Mills Post Office can not do so, therefore, Smithfield and Clayton will be used.
Really? I live in Kenly or sometimes Middlesex, but never have I been confused as to what town I call home. It is amazing what we have to change for a small few.
What about micro and pine level they are still using Selma address that make no sense they have a post iffice
