Van In Funeral Procession Involved In Crash

A funeral procession suddenly became a chaotic scene at the intersection of Swift Creek Road and Cleveland Road near Smithfield Tuesday afternoon.

A pickup collided with a van full of passengers on their way from a Clayton funeral to their loved one’s burial at a nearby cemetery.

Six ambulances responded to the scene to transport the injured to three different hospitals.  Most of the injuries were minor.

The busy intersection was closed for about an hour before reopening. Photos by John Payne
