A Cleveland-area resident lost of large sum of money recently. The 75 year-old retiree said he was on his home computer when a popup appeared on the screen. The urgent “security message” directed him to call a number.
The victim called the number and was told his account needed protecting and the cost was $8,500. The victim went to nearby stores and obtained $8,500 in gift cards, and provided the card numbers to the scammer.
The man reported the incident to law enforcement the following day. If you receive a pop up message, don’t call the number on the screen. Often times the messages will go away. If the messages don’t go away, or your computer screen is locked up, take your computer to a computer repair shop for assistance.
Obviously, he shouldn’t be on a computer.
Saying he shouldn’t be on a computer sounds well, un-American. He has as much right as anyone.
@GOB: i cant think of anythong MORE American, than “if you can’t use a tool properly don’t use it.” This country was built on commonsense.
