A South Carolina couple and a Youngsville man were killed in a 9 vehicle pileup on Interstate 40 near McGee’s Crossroads on Wednesday.
Traffic had come to a stop on the interstate for an accident ahead when troopers said a flatbed utility truck carrying lumber ran into the back of several vehicles.
The driver of a 2008 Volkswagen who died from injuries at Wake Med was identified by troopers as 64 year-old Michael Anthony Peters of Youngsville.
Two additional motorists died when their vehicle burst into flames. Their names have not been released by the Highway Patrol but South Carolina media outlets have identified the couple as McRoy and Josephine Skipper. The couple, in their 70’s, were returning from Durham to their home in Georgetown, SC when they were killed. McRoy Skipper was the chairman of the Tideland Health Board of Trustees and a CPA with WebsterRogers LLP in Georgetown.
Several others were injured and transported to the hospital. Their names and conditions have not been released.
The driver of the flatbed truck that caused the wreck, 61 year-old William Van O’Neal of Garner, has been charged by troopers with three counts of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. Troopers have not said why O’Neal failed to stop.
