The Town of Benson held its 6th annual Keep Benson Beautiful clean-up event last Saturday. A total of 112 volunteers, town employees and elected officials spent a total of 336 hours working to beautify Benson.
The theme for the weekend was, “I Love Benson.” Completed activities included weeding tree boxes across the historic Main Street district, clean-up of the downtown alleyways, picking up debris along roadways in town, general grounds repair at Mitchell Nance Park, and continued work at the new PK Vyas Park.
Volunteers assembled in the former Benson Elementary Gymnasium off Lee and Elm Streets. Volunteers were fed breakfast courtesy of McDonald’s of Dunn, Food Lion and Carlie C’s IGA. Teams of workers, wearing orange NC DOT safety vests, then spread out across town.
“We had such an excellent turnout this weekend,” stated Matt Zapp, Town Manager. “It is always so powerful to see our community in action. Benson is a wonderful place to call home. In fact, we believe that Benson is the Best Small Town in North Carolina!”
Keep Benson Beautiful was capped with a volunteer lunch and door prize giveaway. Workers were treated to Papa’s Pizza, sweet tea from White Swan and desserts from an array of local restaurants. Volunteers also received an array of door prizes from local merchants.
Look for the Keep Benson Beautiful campaign to return in spring of 2017.
