The 2nd Annual Annie D. Jones Child Enrichment Fund 3k Walk was held on Saturday, April 29th. Due to the flooding at the Neuse River, the 22 participates walked the walking trail on the grounds of Smithfield Community Park. $1,610 was raised to fund scholarships for disadvantaged children in the East Smithfield Community to attend summer camp and other recreational and cultural activities.
The Annie D. Jones Child Enrichment Fund is a nonprofit organization designed to offer scholarships to disadvantaged children to attend diverse enrichment activities.
To date, over 50 scholarships have been presented.
Children have participated in summer camp and other recreations sponsored by Smithfield Parks and Recreation, participated in private gymnastics lessons by Morgan’s Gymnastics and private piano lessons, presently taught by Kerrie Clayton at First Baptist Church.
Scholarships have been offered to 12 children to attend SRAC summer camp for two weeks beginning in June, according to Kay McDuffie, Director of the Child Enrichment Fund. Three children have received scholarships to participate in the Neuse Little Theatre’s Summer Program.
