Walmart Shooting Suspect In Custody

Investigators with the Smithfield Police Department have arrested a 19 year-old suspect in connection with a shooting on Friday in the parking lot of Walmart at 1299 N. Brightleaf Boulevard.

Matthew Jason Beddingfield turned himself in to Smithfield Police around 6:45 this morning (Saturday). Beddingfield has been charged with attempted first-degree murder.

At 5:07pm Friday, police were dispatched to the Walmart parking lot following a report of numerous gunshots being fired. Police arrived and located a 17 year-old juvenile in the parking lot near the Garden Center.

Witnesses said the victim had been shot in the head. The victim was rushed to a regional hospital. Saturday morning, police said the victim was in critical condition.

Police have not released details on a possible motive.

Beddingfield is being held in the Johnston County Jail under a $1 million bond.
