Wayne County Public Schools (WCPS) will graduate over 1,200 seniors at the end of the 2017-18 school year. Beginning Saturday, the district’s five traditional academic calendar high schools will graduate approximately 1,000 seniors.
In May, the district’s three non-traditional academic calendar high schools graduated 247 seniors: Goldsboro High (128), Wayne Early/Middle College High School (55), and Wayne School of Engineering (64). The valedictorian for Goldsboro High School was DorMiya Vance and the salutatorian was Kadijah Persall.

District leaders say the graduation season is always exciting time of the year.
“These seniors have worked since Kindergarten in preparation for this academic milestone,” states Dr. Michael Dunsmore, WCPS superintendent. “We congratulate all of them for their hard work and commitment in becoming a Wayne County Public Schools graduate. Our thirteen valedictorians and salutatorians are also to be commended for their achievements. On behalf our district and school communities, I wish all of our graduating seniors the very best as they move on to higher education, the military or the workforce.”
It is worth noting that this year, 30 Wayne Early/Middle College High School graduates and 15 Wayne School of Engineering graduates earned a high school diploma and an associate’s degree from Wayne Community College (WCC). For the first time in history of WCC and WCPS, Charles B. Aycock High senior, Jacob Holmes, will become the first graduate from a traditional WCPS high school to achieve this same distinction. Mr. Holmes will officially graduate from WCC with a two year degree in July.
On Tuesday, June 5, Edgewood Community Developmental School will hold its Graduation Program for students who met their program requirements. This year, the school had a total of seven students graduating. Each student will be presented a certificate of completion. On a special note, during the ceremony, 16 graduating pre-K and elementary students will also be recognized with a certificate of achievement for meeting their program requirements. These students will now be able to transition to a traditional school in the fall.
“The Edgewood Community Developmental School graduation is a very special ceremony which both the school and the district look forward to each year,” adds Dr. Dunsmore. “We are very proud of these graduates and welcome the opportunity to honor them for their accomplishments.”
On July 18, WCPS will hold its 2nd Annual Summer Graduation for students who may not have completed their work or other requirements in time to participate in May/June ceremonies with their classmates. The event will be held at 6 PM in the WCC Moffatt Auditorium.
