GOLDSBORO – Eighty-five adult high school (AHS) and high school equivalency students graduated from Wayne Community College on May 11th, while approximately 400 students walked in Wayne Community College’s curriculum graduation ceremonies on May 12th.
Danielle Johnston, Adult High School graduate, served as the guest speaker for the graduation ceremony on May 11th. Johnston plans to enroll at Mid-Atlantic Christian University in Elizabeth City in the fall to pursue her degree in counseling. Of the AHS program, Johnston said, “This program teaches you how to be independent and to think and solve problems on your own with the knowledge that you have access to teachers and help whenever you need it.”
Gamil Algharazi, a WCC Student Government Association (SGA) officer, offered the first of two student speeches at the curriculum commencement on May 12th. Algharazi earned his associate in science degree and plans to attend UNC-Chapel Hill in the fall, where he earned a full scholarship. Algharazi encouraged his fellow graduates to “not forget the values and lessons we have learned during our time at Wayne Community College. Let us use the knowledge and skills we have acquired to make a positive impact in our communities and the world at large.”
Sarah Brogneaux, SGA president, provided the second student speech for the ceremony. Brogneaux graduated with an associate in science in teacher preparation degree and will be attending East Carolina University in the fall. Brogneaux reflected on her time at WCC and as SGA president by saying, “While serving as the student government president, I had many wonderful opportunities such as participating in board of trustee meetings, running the SGA meetings, and cutting the ribbon for the opening of our new café, the Bison Bistro.”
In addition to the graduation ceremonies, the college also held pinning ceremonies to celebrate students in medical assisting, medical laboratory technology, pharmacy technology, associate degree nursing, and dental hygiene.
Additional recognition ceremonies highlighted truck driving graduates, maintenance technician apprentices, and workforce continuing education nurse aides and phlebotomists.
Dr. Patty Pfeiffer, president of WCC, stated, “We are proud of all of our graduates and know that their lives are going to be forever changed by the credentials they earned as students at WCC.”
