Smithfield Selma High safety Devonte’ Whaley has signed to play football for Barton College and will become part of the inaugural 2020 Barton Bulldogs football class.
Devonte’ will further his education and football career in Wilson with the new NCAA Division II football program.
During his senior year at SSS, Whaley had 6 rushes for 70 yards and a touchdown. He had one reception for 40 yards, 40 tackles, one sack and two interceptions. Devonte’s also returned a kickoff for a touchdown on Homecoming to help seal the win over West Johnston.
” As a coach I would like to express the pride that I as well as our program, school and community have for these young men. This is what makes all we do worth it. I ultimately want our program to be a beacon of hope for the Smithfield and Selma communities and show kids that if they work hard and dedicate themselves then their dreams can be realized,” stated SSS Head Coach Mike Parrish. “In finishing my second year as head coach, my staff and I have now sent 8 student athletes on to the next level. I hope to continue this great tradition and instill in our kids that their environment doesn’t have to define them, Devonte’ is a great role model for future Spartans and he is well deserving of his success.”
Devonte has a 3.12 GPA and plans to study Engineering at Barton.
