Wife Mistaken For Burglar Fatally Shot By Husband

A tragic situation unfolded early Friday morning in Wayne County after a man mistook his wife for a burglar and fatally shot her on the front porch of their Goldsboro area home.

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting happened at 12:27am this morning. Billy Williams, 49, was asleep in the family home with two juveniles when one of the children heard a noise outside and thought it was someone trying to break in. The child awakened her father advising him someone was at the front door attempting to gain entry.

Williams retrieved a handgun from a gun safe in the bedroom and went towards the front door.  Williams did not know that his wife, Gina Williams, 48, had gotten off work early from her evening shift. She was not expected home until 8:00am.  The front porch light was not on at the time.

Billy Williams said he opened the front door and was met by a person in the dark. He fired his handgun once, fatally striking his wife in the neck.

Deputies tell us they have conducted interviews with family members and at last report no charges have been filed against the husband. Captain Richard Lewis said the investigation was still ongoing.
