SELMA – Selma Police Chief J.A. Hughes has announced the promotion of William “Billy” Baker. Baker has been a sergeant since 2021. Effective today (Friday), he is the Captain of the Investigative (Detectives) Division.

“He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the detectives division and I’m pleased to have him. He will be a great asset to that unit,” Chief Hughes said.

Captain Baker was born in Georgia and moved to Johnston County at the age of two. He grew up in the Four Oaks – Smithfield area. A 1996 graduate of Smithfield Selma High School, he completed Basic Law Enforcement Training in 2009 and joined the Selma police force that same year. Baker has served as a patrol officer, corporal, and most recently sergeant of the patrol division.

“It’s a great honor to be selected. I want to continue working and moving the department forward,” Captain Baker said. He fills the captain’s position left vacant when Jeff Bass was promoted to Major.

In his spare time, Captain Baker enjoys golf.
