Wilson’s Mills Names First Full-Time Fire Chief

WILSON’S MILLS — The Wilson’s Mills Fire Department has entered a new era with the appointment of Jason Moore as its first full-time fire chief. Moore, a veteran with 35 years of fire service experience, officially stepped into the role on Dec. 1, 2025.
The appointment marks a significant milestone for the department, which has grown steadily alongside the town it serves. Moore succeeds longtime Chief Bentley Powell, who retired in September after 32 years of service. Powell began as a volunteer and went on to lead the department in both volunteer and part-time capacities. Town and department officials expressed deep gratitude for his decades of dedication.
Moore brings an extensive background spanning both volunteer and career departments. He previously served nearly 20 years in leadership roles with the La Plata Fire Department, including assistant chief, deputy chief and fire chief. He also spent many years with the District of Columbia Fire Department, where he retired as a captain and often served as acting battalion chief.
His commitment to the fire service began early. Moore recalls riding along as a child with his great-uncle, a battalion chief in Washington, D.C. He entered the profession at age 15 as a volunteer, carrying with him lessons in hard work, integrity and service that he says shaped his career.
Known for his team-focused leadership style, Moore emphasizes mentorship, professional development and preparedness. His approach centers on empowering personnel, strengthening morale and upholding high standards of safety and customer service. He says he is especially passionate about helping recruits grow into firefighters, firefighters become officers and officers develop into future leaders.
In addition to operational experience, Moore brings a strong background in budgeting, strategic planning, organizational management and community relations. He said he is eager to serve the Wilson’s Mills community and contribute to the department’s continued growth.
“Delivering excellent service to the community I call home is truly fulfilling,” Moore said. “I am honored to lead this department, support our members and continue building a fire service our community can be proud of.”
Moore began his duties as fire chief on Monday.
