Wilson’s Mills Seeks Applicants To Fill Mayor Vacancy

WILSON’S MILLS, N.C. – The Town of Wilson’s Mills is accepting applications from residents interested in serving as mayor following the death of longtime Mayor Fleta Byrd.

The person selected by the Wilson’s Mills Town Council will serve the remainder of Byrd’s unexpired term through December 2027.

Although the mayor is ordinarily elected by town voters, the Town Council is responsible for filling a vacancy when one occurs before the end of a term.

The council will review applications and appoint a qualified resident to the position.

Longtime Public Servant

Byrd, 77, died Aug. 16. Her involvement with Wilson’s Mills stretched back to the town’s incorporation in 1996. She volunteered with recreation programs, community activities and town events before taking on formal roles in town government.

Byrd served as the town’s part-time planning director from 2006 until 2012 and later served on the Wilson’s Mills Town Council from 2013 to 2017.

She was elected mayor in 2021 and continued serving until her death. Byrd was reelected without opposition in November 2025.

Applications Being Accepted

Town officials said applicants should be Wilson’s Mills residents interested in local government and community service.

The Town Council will review the applications. The town has not announced when the appointment will be made.
