Smithfield Police are investigating the assault and robbery of a East Smithfield woman inside her home over-the-weekend. Police said the incident was not random.
Around 2:40am Saturday, the 31 year-old victim called 911 reporting a male acquaintance visiting at her home on Second Avenue suddenly demanded her money then began striking the victim with a lead pipe.
Police Captain R. Sheppard said the suspect took $80 in cash and a cell phone before fleeing.
The victim was treated and released at the scene by paramedics for her injuries.
Captain Sheppard said detectives are looking for a known suspect in the case.
