ERWIN – An Erwin woman lost her life on Wednesday night when she was struck by a truck allegedly driven by an Erwin man who left the scene.

Erwin Chief of Police Jonathan Johnson reports officers with his agency were dispatched to a hit-and-run at 5:42 p.m. in the vicinity of the intersection of North 10th and East H streets. Callers at the scene reported the victim was possibly dead.

At 5:51 p.m., paramedics confirmed the victim was dead on the scene.

Susan Manus, 63, of East J Street, Erwin, a wife and mother, was identified as the victim.

Witnesses told police the vehicle was a red and white striped medium-sized truck resembling a Chevrolet or an Isuzu. The truck was seen on North 10th Street headed north towards U.S. Highway 421.

Forensics investigators with the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol reconstruction team assisted Erwin police by processing evidence at the scene.

Later Wednesday night, investigators were able to locate the suspect vehicle at 231 East L St. in Erwin. Allen Reaves, 59, of the same address, was questioned and arrested by Erwin police. He is charged with felonious hit-and-run causing serious injury or death, leaving the scene of an accident, driving with a revoked license and driving without vehicle insurance. He is being held at the Harnett County Detention Center under a $350,000 bond.

“I want to thank the Sheriff’s Office, the Highway Patrol and Erwin Fire Department for their assistance in handling this incident,” the chief said. “I am also proud of the hard work and dedication of Erwin’s police department which led to a quick arrest. The public should also be recognized for their tips and information.”

This is the second time pedestrians have been struck on the streets of Erwin in a span of 90 days.

Two sisters were hit by a vehicle which left the scene during the annual Denim Days celebration. Those girls were treated and released with only minor injuries and the suspected driver was arrested and charged in that crime as well.

  1. Driving with revoked license and no auto insurance- all too common. When someone loses their license and/or has no insurance, they should be required to hand over the keys to their vehicle. They shouldn’t be allowed to even own a working vehicle, unless its a moped. Again, criminals continue to be criminals and cause irreparable damage to our society at large. This poor lady lost her life because this selfish man decided he is above the law. Shame on him!

  2. Shame on you jocolame. Prayers go out to Susan at the same time people have lives to live and that doesnt make him a criminal. In that case you are a criminal and your BWW lame friend as well. Yes ok. He shouldnt have even been driving, but see, accidents like this happen everyday. If your daughter or mother was in the same situation fell asleep while driving and killed someone you would want justice but respectfully. Dont get up here and start bashing this man you DONT know and start commenting on a situation you have not 1 clue about. Al is a good man and did not try to leave the scene after knowingly killing someone. I guarantee it.

  3. Ummmm. DLS. You make want to delete your comment, because actually running over/hitting a person and killing them , on a un-licensed, un-insured un-registered, etc ….. vehicle while not having a driver’s licenses and then leaving the scene….. actually does make you a “CRIMINAL “. So I ask you , if it was your mother, daughter, sister , aunt , cousin and someone hit and killed them and drove away like they were just a wild animal would you feel the same . Man up stay at the scene and own what you did . He knew he was wrong hence why he left .

  4. I am the husband my wife was off the road and on the opposite side of the road why did he go all the way over on the other side of the road and hit her that is murder if you ask me. And I will do whatever it takes to keep this murder from ever behind bars. I will be at every otne of his court dates. To see that he gets everything he possible get.
