SMITHFIELD – A Smithfield woman who claimed she was struck by a police car has been criminally charged.
On October 30, a Smithfield police officer responded to an emergency call, with blue lights and siren, in the Martin Luther King Jr. Drive area, off Brogden Road. Afterwards, Lakiva Dannette Morrison, age 53, of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive reportedly contacted a police supervisor claiming the responding officer ran over her foot, as she stood beside the roadway. Morrison was not involved or connected to the emergency call.
Police conducted an investigation, including a review of dash camera video from the patrol cruiser. Police said Morrison can be seen in the video, but the patrol car was not close to her when the officer drove by.
On December 4, Morrison was served with a warrant for misdemeanor filing a false police report. She was released on a $5,000 unsecured bond pending a January 29, 2024 appearance in Johnston County District Court.
