The State Highway Patrol said one person died and two others were injured when a tractor trailer and Chevrolet Silverado pickup collided. The wreck was reported at 12:03pm Wednesday on Highway 231 at Flower Hill Road in northeastern Johnston County near the Nash County line.
Trooper C.E. Summerlin said a black Chevy Silverado driven by Celeste Outland, 27, of Wilson was traveling north on Flower Hill Road and began to make a left turn onto Highway 231 but failed to yield to a tractor trailer traveling east on Highway 231.
The tractor trailer struck the driver’s side door of the pickup. Both vehicles then traveled off the roadway. Emergency crews had to extricate Outland and a front seat passenger from the pickup truck. Outland succumbed to her injuries at the scene. The passenger, Larry Hawley, 61, of Middlesex was transported to WakeMed with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the semi, Donnie Thomas, was also transported to WakeMed with non-life threatening injuries. The intersection was closed for several hours until the wreckage could be cleared from the scene.
Trooper Summerlin said no charges will be filed.
