$10,000 Grant To Support Food Programs For Johnston County Children

SMITHFIELD, N.C. – The Salvation Army of Smithfield has received a $10,000 grant to help provide food to children facing hunger in Johnston County.

The funding comes from the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation through its Summers Without Hunger program.

The Salvation Army said the money will be used to purchase food through Haven Hangout and related programs that provide meals and snacks to children, particularly when school-based food programs are not available.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation for investing in the well-being of children and families in our community,” said Lt. Christopher Rawls, corps officer for The Salvation Army of Smithfield.

Rawls said the funding will help the organization continue assisting families struggling with food insecurity.

“Partnerships like this allow us to meet critical needs and provide hope to families who may be struggling with food insecurity,” he said. “Together, we can ensure that more children have access to the nourishment they need to thrive.”

The Salvation Army of Smithfield serves Johnston County through food assistance, youth programs, emergency aid and other services.

The Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation provides grants to organizations working to reduce hunger in communities served by Food Lion. Since it was established in 2001, the foundation has awarded more than $25 million to hunger-relief programs.

Rawls said the $10,000 grant will have a direct impact on local children and families.

“This grant will have a meaningful and lasting effect on the children and families we serve,” he said.
