BENSON – The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office said Monday the death of a 2 year-old child Sunday night was accidental. Shortly after 6:00pm Sunday, deputies responded to the 900 block of West Watson Road in the McGee’s Crossroads area for a report of a shooting.
Deputies arrived and found 2 year-old Warren Bennett Oser near a pickup truck behind the home. The child had a gunshot wound to the body. Authorities said both parents were on the scene.
Lt. Don Pate said detectives discovered the child had climbed into his father’s pickup truck through an open door and was playing with a loaded handgun that was inside the vehicle. The child was able to discharge the handgun, resulting in a self-inflicted injury.
EMS rushed the child to Johnston Medical Center in Clayton where he died from his injuries.
“This death investigation is considered to be an unfortunate accident at this time; however, this investigation is ongoing,” Lt. Pate said in a press release.
Incredibly sad. Why is a 2 year old rifling through his father’s truck unsupervised?
My thoughts are with this family. Devastating.
I know it’s ez to pass judgement…. But please don’t right now …. This is a Christian family and this child was an absolute blessing to a young family …… It’s easy to sit back and say this and say that , but do know this family is hurting to the CORE ! Send prayers not judgment PLEASE
Would be nice if that sentiment was passed to all families going through this and not just because they are Christian – as if that makes a difference- it doesn’t. Children belonging to non-Christian families may well be blessings to their families as well… and sadly when a parent makes a mistake like this- they need to face consequences…
Very sorry for their loss but this was preventable.
Id never want someone to feel bad about losing a kid. However i agree with my friend here. Christianity had nothing to do with it. I wish people were cautious about having a gun. My doors always locked and safety is always on
WoW, incredibly sad. I can’t even imagine what the parents must be going through. Prayers.
My heart goes out to the family. My family prayers are with the family.God has gained a beautiful angel.God bless.
The question of “why is a 2 year old rifling through his dad’s truck” is a little silly. The answer is because he’s 2 years old and that’s what kids do – get into things we can’t foresee, and things they shouldn’t. Which is why the question should be asked, why did his dad have a loaded gun in his unlocked truck, where his 2 year old could access it?
Of course the answer that republicans want to give is that “more guns would have prevented this tragedy.” Because more guns is the solution to every gun incident. Maybe if the truck came equipped with an AR15, it could have held the kid at gunpoint and told him to back off.
It’s because of the proliferation of guns everywhere that this crap happens. This used to be rare. Now we read about the same stuff every week – kids accidentally shooting kids. How hard is it to look at FACTS and NUMBERS and see the truth?
Buck Reynolds you win the asinine post on this thread.
My condolences to the family.
All he did was type the truth – although we must not forget to add the Republican mantra when so much gun violence happens: thoughts and prayers . As if that helps at all . It doesn’t.
Leighla all he did was to bring politics to a place it shouldn’t be mentioned. But hey, you came in 2nd place for an asinine comment.
I agree đź’Ż
