Public utility officials have reported a 45,000 gallon sewage spill in Johnston County. The discharge of untreated wastewater occurred Tuesday due to a force main failure on Cornwallis Road at the Swift Creek crossing. The spill was caused by “pipeline material failure” officials said.
The untreated wastewater was discharged and contained in a low-lying area adjacent to Swift Creek. Approximately 180,000 gallons of combined wastewater and rainwater contained in the spill area had been recovered as of 8:00 am Wednesday (today). The recovered water is being pumped into the County’s wastewater collection system for treatment.
The NC Division of Water Resources was notified of the event and is reviewing the matter.
Anyone with questions about the spill may contact the Johnston County Public Utilities Department at 919-989-5075.
