A 5,000 gallon sewage spill has been reported at the Benson Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The Town of Benson said the discharge of untreated wastewater occurred on Tuesday inside the treatment plant. Heavy rainfall caused a filter to overflow. The affected area was confined to Town of Benson property.
The overflow was discovered around 5:20am and was contained and remediated by 6am Tuesday.
The untreated water did not reach any surface waters.
On October 15th, a 1,500 gallon sewage spill was reported inside the same treatment plant. Officials did not say what caused that spill. The affected area was confined to Town of Benson property and remediated without reaching any surface waters.
The NC Division of Water Resources has been notified about both events.
