A 7 month-old baby is in stable condition after shots rang out at a birthday party.
The Sampson County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting happened on Bumpy Lane off Highway 701 just north of Clinton.
Around 8:55pm Sunday, deputies responded to a shots fired call and arrived to find a woman carrying the infant who had been shot in the torso.
The child was rushed to Sampson Regional Medical Center then airlifted to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
Sheriff’s Captain Eric Pope said a birthday celebration was being held at a nearby home when two armed men approached another man at the location and an altercation ensued. The intended target took off running toward his vehicle. The two armed subjects opened fire and one of the bullets went through the wall of a mobile home where the infant lived, striking the child.
The two suspects were described as Hispanic males. One of the gunmen was wearing a mask.
The incident remains under investigation.
The name of the infant is being withheld as well as the name of the intended target of the shooting for safety reasons.
