Apartment Building Burns

CLAYTON – Eight people were displaced after an apartment building on US Highway 70 caught fire and burned. The building at one time was a restaurant but was converted years ago to apartments.

At 4:42pm Saturday, fire crews arrived to find flames coming from the second floor. The Clayton, Cleveland, Smithfield, and Wilson’s Mills Fire Departments responded.

The Red Cross is providing aid to the eight individuals who were displaced.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office and Johnston County Fire Marshal’s Office. No injuries were reported.

  1. Sure sorry to hear this. I did a job on a house that is behind these apartments several months ago. The homeowner of the adjacent property told me that mostly construction workers lived there but there was one sweet older lady that lived there. Prayers for her and all that were affected.
