Arrest Made In Series Of Mailbox Check Thefts

JOHNSTON COUNTY — A Durham man has been arrested in connection with a series of mailbox check thefts and forgeries in western Johnston County. Authorities say about 10 victims reported checks stolen from mailboxes in the same general area last year.
Detectives with the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office identified Amahd Marquie Alston, 24, of Finsbury Street, Durham, as a suspect in the thefts, which began in June 2025. The stolen checks were later forged and cashed.
Investigators reviewed surveillance footage from businesses and ATMs, which helped link Alston to the crimes.
Alston was arrested on January 16 and charged with felony obtaining property by false pretense and uttering a forged instrument.
Additional charges are possible as the investigation continues.
